Re: G16 motor in a 1999 Carry van.

I don't know the ratios, but I've owned both and I believe they're exactly the same in the 99+ models..

Re: G16 motor in a 1999 Carry van.

8, I've currently got the front shaft out of my AWD Carry ute, and it is a handful even with the standard 1298 engine. In the wet it's very difficult to pull out at T-intersections without wheelspin, requiring a bigger break in traffic than usual. I've found a decent sized toolbox tends to help.. :w...

Well done 8!! Now you need AWD to get all that power to the ground!

Re: G16 motor in a 1999 Carry van.

It's nice to see a few people attempting this conversion since I did mine. I'll be watching to see if any of you come up with better solutions to the problems encountered as I still haven't ruled out the possibility of doing the same conversion to my AWD Carry Truck.

Re: G16 motor in a 1999 Carry van.

You are correct on all counts, but I put the larger motor in purely to gain bottom-end torque as I was carting around two adults and about 200kgs of dogs on the weekends, and I got tired of having to change down on some of the local hills. It went VERY well after the upgrade and I didn't feel that f...

Re: G16 motor in a 1999 Carry van.

Yep, the Baleno motor didn't come with a flywheel so I used what I had... Port sizes were the same, so the exhaust and intake went straight on. Biggest issue was adapting the electronic crank sensor. :)

Re: G16 motor in a 1999 Carry van.

My memory of that is kind've sketchy as it was at least four years ago, but the Baleno engine required two holes to be drilled through the flange on the Carry box. I made some aluminium blocks up which fit into the fillet where the flange meets the side of the bellhousing which allowed me to use lon...

Re: G16 motor in a 1999 Carry van.

Thanks 8. No issues with the engine mounts in either vehicle, but I have managed to flog the centre out of a couple of the front diff mounting rubbers in the ute, which just serves to remind me that these vehicles weren't designed to do the things I do to it.

Re: G16 motor in a 1999 Carry van.

I haven't come across the 2nd gear issue before, but the synchros of third have flogged out in both of my Carrys, (but I do give them an absolute caning!) The box in the van was repaired by the local mechanic in Warragul (some years ago, can't remember the company) for under $500 and I just haven't ...

Re: G16 motor in a 1999 Carry van.

G'day guys, just found this forum on my hunt for bits for my current project. Just wondering where oldvanman got up to with his project as the thread petered out quite a while ago... Ps. The motor I used was originally East-West mounted in a Baleno. :-o http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2...
