Re: Diesel Project

Finally got it all together and running nicely so time to hide it all behind its Queensland Railways clothing. Big job but satisfying result.

Re: Diesel Project

Well, as I suggested in reply 2 up, I did indeed assemble something wrong, I used the wrong marks when lining up the bellhousing and the stress finally destroyed the drive plate. Went with a bang. Picked up all the bits and started again. Make new flywheel and add the outer of the flex plate. Realig...

Re: Diesel Project

https://www.facebook.com/peter.nixon.547/videos/310960092572929/ Out on the track it performs well. Some things to sort out include overheating as motor has no water pump (thermosyphon doesn't work if radiator isn't higher than motor) which can be cured with electric pump. Also alternator is reputed...

Re: Diesel Project

A bit of progress. Transmission and final drive all connected, Now has air brakes, the Honda Civic radiator, fuel system,  dummy fuel tanks (to hide the diff) and a spaghetti of wires.  Gear selector and throttle are temporary rods. So it's outside and started first time (albeit in a huge cloud of s...

Re: Diesel Project

And another ,somewhat smaller, using a 2 cyl Kub, mated to a MB auto that has the diff on top (90* rotated) . With locked diff and one bogie drive via a Datsun 1600 diff. Neat, eh!

Re: Diesel Project

Most 3 axle bogies rely on compensating bars to even out the load. Clyde Engineering departed from that idea and used a simpler method using 6 sprung axleboxes but then a second subframe with 4 sprung corners.  I seem to have underestimated the weight as the springs are partly compressed, so I will ...

Re: Diesel Project

Bogie assembled, but without brakes at the moment. Here I have lifted the frame to slide the bogie in. Then I will lower it on to that bar to check if suspension calculations worked. The jackshaft at the rear is located by torque rods to prevent axle windup.

Re: Diesel Project

Motor is back in the chassis, so time to start the driveline. Here the first of the two 6 wheel drive bogies starts to take shape. pete

Re: Diesel Project

Frame needed to be inverted to weld up the fixtures, so I took the opportunity to pull the motor out and clean and paint it.  Next time it goes in it won't EVER be coming out....seriously tight fit!

http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/pumps681?_trksid=p2047675.l2559 Hi. This is where I got mine. I've just ordered a second alloy one as the bigger one had "space issues" !    ( It's available if you want)  Mine is rated at 15 hp for agricultural use (sprayers etc)  Peter might be able to help you...

Re: Diesel Project

Hi. Glad I'm able to keep you entertained.  This loco is expected to weigh about 1/2 ton, Weight is important for grip, but still has to be transported on ute, so it's a balancing act.   Bill just contacted to say he's found the auto selector so I'll follow that up before you go searching too far.  ...

Re: Diesel Project

Getting layout sorted. Shortened driveshaft sleeve, cut off spline end and welded sleeve to CV. Much neater.  Abit more cut and shut and the engine bay is now 385mm wide!. Knocked up low profile exhaust, and removed oil filter to achieve that. Have to make remote oil filter adaptor for the block (ha...

Re: Diesel Project

nutter, this is a 722 and cost $350 xJapanese imports. Got it running on a pallet. Only real problem is that while the crankshaft is exactly the same as the flex plate it has 5 bolts to the spooks six. Bugger! Minor adjustment to the drive plate using cut down flywheel as adaptor Brayden, I'll take ...

Re: Diesel Project

and todays progress. The sleeve between drive shaft and angle box won't cut it, so it needs a hub or two to make an adaptor. Bogie is currently an ally cutout, to check clearances.
