The orphaned connectors could be allowances in (a standardised) wiring loom for extra gizmos that were never fitted into the boy... Like a clock, or something...

People go the other way - an F5A box on an F8B, and persevere with high revs - the F8B box has a lower final drive ratio to suit the larger engine than the F5A box. ...
