I mentioned a couple of years ago that the Mammoth 800 farm utility vehicle is fitted with an F8B. What I've recently found out is that the Mammoth 800 uses an electronic ignition, which would be useful if you want to get rid of the points system.

The distributor should be a drop-in replacement. ;)

Yeah pretty common, made by Kazuma. There's a parts distributor in Sydney.

ok, the dizzy costs $165 on its own.

would i be right in saying if i wanted to fit one, i would have to run some kind of ignition module (like link below)?

Yep you would need an ignition module/ignitor, and a 12v (non-ballast) coil.

ive got a friend who has one of the mammoth 800s for the farm it goes pretty hard, and so far havent had any problems. i will see if the dizzy is a direct drop in on the weekend seeing as it is not in use at the moment.

ok guys here it is good news and a little headache. the dizzy will fit but you will need to change the dizzy drive gear over as the mammoth one has a straight cut gear drive. change over shouldnt be hard at all. but at least we now have options for an electronic ignition system upgrdae. i wonder just how much of an improvement it will make.

Thanks for the info, now I'm just wondering, do I buy one, muck around with it, fit it or take the original to crane cams, decisions decisions :NFI:

I did this conversion a while ago, I removed the in-built ignition module, extended the wires using a 1-pair shielded wire with one end grounded and ran it to a bosch 008 module off a camira/xf/corolla (just about any 70s-80s car with electronic ignition) as it controls the dwell internally, ie doesnt need an ECU.

I used that to trigger a bosch HEC/MEC coil.

Works quite well!

Nice work, don't suppose you have any pics at all?

I was thinking about a proquip points conversion, but a new dizzy with an electronic module might be a better way to go.

i finally sorted out my ignition troubles, had a spare dizzy rebuilt with crane cams xr3000 electronic ignition system and new hei coil, has made an absolute world of difference

http://www.cranecams.com/406-407.pdf

to be honest i wouldnt bother with the mammoth dizzy, by the time you buy the ignition module and coil, its going to cost about the same as what ive done anyways, just over $400 including a complete overhaul of the distributor'

car now runs SO much better

Only trouble I see with the crane setup is that there is no info on it suiting 3cyl engines. I take it there is another set of small parts to fit inside the dizzy to suit 3cyl operation?

Cheers
