i thought the old gas was R12, but i may be wrong.
the current gas is R134A. it is what everybody uses now.
if your car still uses the old gas, all you have to do is have it retro-fitted. i have had this done on a couple cars in the past. it just involves the replacement of the receiver/dryer unit and new pipe fittings. if you have an air conditioning specialist do the whole job it should set you back around the $400-$500 mark including new gas. they also drain the old oil in the A/C system and add new oil compatible with R134A gas.

there are plenty of places that do the old gas, except they use a mixture of propane and refrigerant the propane is only a small proportion so don't be influenced by the stories of it blowing up, they are just stories.no more dangerous than lpg motors.

R12 gas is the old stuff and as far as i know it's now illegal to use it.
I'm also led to believe it's very hard to come by these days even if you can find someone that is a bit 'backyardish'
I'm upgrading to R134a in my cruiser, easier to get and easier to fix if i have problems.

There are what are called "Drop in " replacement gases for older systems to keep them going. One gas I use is called SP34E however you still have to change your compressor oil, o-rings and filter drier. The oil I use is called ROC.
If you go to R134A you need to change the compressor shaft seal as well and flexible hoses.
Forget any proppane based ones.
