G’day All,

I've posted this in another forum but I'm looking to get some more responses here.
I’m sure someone here can help me out or at least point me in the right direction. At the very least, you might be interested or just get a laugh out of what I’m trying to do!!!

I’m working on a project at the moment and am looking for a TD02 turbo or turbo off a Suzuki Cappuccino or something similar. Preferably off an engine of around 600cc. I’m planning on fitting it to an engine of 1200cc – 1300cc, something like a 120Y, Corolla, or Escort engine, and the engine will power a miniature train.

I need the engine to produce at least 30hp… I know, stand back, the power will be overwhelming!!! But the catch is that the engine needs to produce this at around 1500 - 2000rpm. While 30hp is easy to produce from an engine this size, it may not be quite so easy at such low revs.
I want to keep the engine revs this low to help create a better sound effect from the loco. The added whistle from the turbo will be an added bonus!!!

The engine will drive two massive alternators – each of them about the size of a 10 litre paint can. The alternators will be modified so the output voltage is variable from 0 volts to about 50 volts and each of these will drive a large DC traction motor powering the train.
All of my locos are driven using an this way using an "engine/alternator/electric traction motor" combination. The control system that I have built allows for an infinitely variable speed/power control. From literally a snails pace of just 10mm/min to up to around 15Kph. It also allows two or more locos to be coupled together and driven from the one control.

I am extremely limited on space inside the loco so I need to find the smallest engine I can that will produce sufficient power. The under bonnet area for the engine to fit in is only 400mm wide x 550mm high which is the reason behind using one of the older single, non overhead cam, non cross flow head engines listed above.

The idea is to bump up the compression a bit and hopefully get 3 – 4 psi of boost into the engine to produce the hp to drive it all. Now to be totally honest, I don’t even know if this is going to work? At 1500 - 2000rpm, even the “big block” 1300cc engine may not produce enough exhaust gas flow to make any boost at all. It’s kind of a “suck it and see” experiment!
With this in mind, I don’t want to fork out much for the turbo so I don’t want to buy a new one even though they are reasonably cheap on ebay. At the same time, I don’t want one that is completely stuffed with leaking seals, etc.

So, if someone has one kicking around after a turbo upgrade or from a wrecked car that is still in usable condition and wants to part with it on the cheap, or even if you need some laser cut or CNC machined exhaust flanges or something then maybe we can do a deal!

To contact me about a turbo or if you’re at all interested in the train build, log onto my website at: http://www.smex.net.au/bouldercreek

I’d also be interested to hear a few suggestions on how or why this may or may not work!
Thanks in advance.

Dave.

Hi Dave, I'm also a member of RedlineGTi and suggest the AMR300 supercharger. To answer your question the supercharger is fitted to a number of Kei cars, most predominantly the Subaru Rex/Vivio.

I reckon it is your best. They can be found on ebay for less than $300, and forum member kcarking (John Verban) sells flange plates and pulleys to suit.

Thanks Brayden,

So I've picked up a 4EFE – 1300cc Toyota Starlet front cut on the cheap and I've also scored an AMR500 blower! I'm still hung up on the sound affects that I would get from a turbo though so am still after something small. I might even run both yet. the blower for the boost and the turbo just for the sound effects! Something off a 660cc - 990cc engine, or possibly just one 1GGTE turbo?

Someone must have something laying around somewhere....... Anyone??? :NFI:

what are the dc motors you are using in it?

The motors are industrial DC motors used on electric anchor winches, electric fork trucks, etc.
They are rated at 3.5 Kw @ 24 volts but are capable of handling the 50 volts or so that the alternators will produce after they have been modified for this application.
