Hi All
Not strictly a MightyBoy question but more one on the F5A engine.
I have a F5A that powers a miniature train. (No MightyBoys were hurt in its building!) the engine has a Solex carb and I need to find a replacement. I have found a supplier in the States who says they have them but the picture is rather different to the Solex. I am aware that Mikunioz also made carbs for the F5A but I thought these were clones of the Solex made under licence or did they look totally different? If they are different, are they interchangeable?
Finally, can anyone suggest where I can get a new carb, or a refurbished one, in Australia?
Many thanks in advance.
Cheers
Ady
Carburettor
Hi Ady.
The factory carb supplied with the F5A motor is actually a Mikuni brand 'solex type' carburettor.
Older, well worn carbies can be problematic, but can be stripped and rebuilt quite readily with a carby kit (regularly available on ebay etc.) Any carby specialist should be able to source one fairly easily.
You don't say where you are, but if you're in Melbourne / Victoria, there is a guy in Wantirna who rebuilt mine (which has now run sweet as a nut for three years - in hindsight without doubt, the best money I spent on the car) -
The Carby Shop (Nigel)
5 Sherwood Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152
(03) 9801 3984 (Worth a phone-call at least!)
He can do wizardry-like things with carburettors... and is quite reasonable with his pricing.
Failing that, some of the guys looking for better performance do fit other carbs to their engines, but by that stage, they're usually working with the F5A's bigger brother - the F8B as a basis too.
Good luck with your train!

If you're rebuilding the carby yourself then the kit is about $75+ your time to do it. Expect to pay between $2-300 to have it rebuild by a pro.
The latter option seems silly when there is this option:
