Final Drive
The diff is what makes the difference between the F5A and F8B gearbox's. Final drive on the 800 box is taller than the 550, hence why it cruises better at 100kph.

I think they've got the same bell-housing...
I reckon you'd be hard pressed to knock it into 4th often on an F8B 'box, though...

Josh is right, a 550 wouldn't have the puff to turn an 800 box in fourth, you'd be constantly hunting for gears - third is too short to cruise at 80kph.
Besides, the 550 box has a longer input shaft and spigot bearing, wheras the 800 does not. (Or at least that was the case for me.)

Don't forget the wind factor!

I hear that it has been done, although it's a bit of work...

I assume you mean fitting the Swift 5 speed box? Its a different series (G vs F) so it won't bolt up. Could possibly be done with a tricked out clutch/flywheel and input shaft though.
Josh where did you hear of the fitment being done?

When I was working full-time at SuperCheap Auto in Queanbeyan, a customer approached the front desk one day asking if the MightyBoy outside was a staff car. He was directed to me and we proceeded to have a chat about the tiny trucks. He claimed to have owned one at one point, into which he had successfully grafted the Swift 5-speed box. Said that he had the conversion done somewhere down south... Melbourne or Adelaide - I can't remember which.
He didn't sound like he was talking complete shit, unlike the hordes of other wankers I encountered through work at that point... He said he'd had a bell-housing adaptor plate manufactured somewhere but didn't go into any detail on the compatibility of the input shaft.
