(block and head were machined flat less than 10,000km before the incident, which turns out was caused by detonation on cylinder 1)

I would drive normally and the reservoir would always fill up and overflow, but the car wasn't getting hot, fixed the problem by going to a MLS headgasket.
Sounds like it could be it then. Have ordered a headgasket and bolt set so will try to do it while the timing belt's off. Not too much more work to do once the belt is off.

Was looking at my engine today and where the oil was coming from. It does seem to be coming from the top of the block. So I have a question. Could a damaged headgasket cause these issues:
1. Oil leak(s) from the top of the block (gasket area)
2. Coolant to expand into reservoir after driving normally

Should note the car is not overheating currently and the oil and coolant are not visibly mixing together, but it just looks like it could be the headgasket if damage to it could lead to an oil leak or 2 from that area.

Absolutely. A corroded head/block could also cause the same issues.

Well god only knows what the actual cause of all this is. Looking tonight it could very well be the rocker cover gaskets, one of which seems to have blown in a big way. The ends of the spark plug leads are swimming in oil at the moment, and it could be leaking down the front of the engine and looking like it could be a headgasket oil leak.

In an amazing feat of mechanical stupidity though, the timing belt has to come off to replace one of these gaskets. Ah well, will find out tomorrow hopefully.

yeah I have an oil leak on the rear left of the motor somewhere, thought it was coming out of the dissy/fuel pump drive but is too far back, pools in the small cavity right under the engine brace , gave it a good hose down but can't see where it is coming from, none is going to the top of the gearbox where you would expect it if it was the dissy cover, and there is only the normal amount of gunge under the dissy cover.
