Hi supervan.
You say it gets hot and overflows, then you top it up, so, Is it losing water?
You may have a clogged radiator, a faulty thermostat, a dicky radiator cap, or something more sinister.
Typically, 1/2 way up the guage would imply it's getting warmer than it should. Typically the temp guage should sit somewhere around 1/3.
I hope you're topping it up with COOLANT not water... (Water is bad ju-ju for alloy heads).
Cheers

First thing to do is replace the radiator cap with a new one and do a coolant flush. Also check the timing and make sure it isn't too far advanced.
Is the engine difficult to start in the mornings? Does it chug at idle for a while? Milky residue in the oil? If so then there's a good chance you have a blown head gasket.

thanks for the advice very helpful. ive just done a oil change no milky looking stuff it starts no problems in the morning and idles fine checked the radiator cap and it looks to be the problem. you can also see where the coolant has been coming out of the cap. so i think when it starts to warm up coolant comes out of the cap and then starts to run hot when thers not much coolant left? so wher can i get anew one do other caps fit? thankes
