Hi
My '85 550cc Auto MB gear box has died
The local mechanic want $2700 to pull it out, send it away to have it rebuilt and put it back in??
I am in Armidale (NSW) so the nearest good trasmission place is Tamworth, apparently. So my dilema is do I spend more money on it or scrap it? I just spent $1000 for complete new breaks and a couple of tires.
It just this is a really good MB, straight body, as new carptes and seats, only done 105,000km and has aftermarket central locking and CD player. Is in great nick and goeas great until now.
I guess an alternative is to put a 2nd hand auto in if I can find one and get it shipped. But may as well fix the one I got. I just didn't want to spend so much money on it.
Any ideas?
Auto gear box rebuild? is it worth it?
YUP bit tricky if you aren't going to do the work yourself then you are approaching the stage of spend or let it go.......not really advice I can give as it comes down to can you afford to spend this on a vehicle of this age (see RED BOOK for value ) and the rest of the vehicle is still aging but what to replace it with .If you were doing the work yourself then yes most vehicles can be kept long past their use by date. Probably not that helpful but best I can offer RF
Get with it ,Get over it ,Get on with it .....OR LEAVE
I have an auto transaxle that I am not likely to use again as my F8b has cracked the rings in No.3. Last time I looked the motor was very much in rebuildable condition & the auto works well (not certain that the auto was F8b as I could only get 115Km/h).
I am going G10a & 5 speed now. My old gear might be an option for you.

So many delays to getting my MB back in order with 993cc & 5 speed transaxle... neighbor issue gone, donor shell up on rotisserie, new sheds on the way.... another project also..
I've tried two second hand slushboxes - in each case I was told they were in "great condition". Both have suffered major problems.
I would suggest if you can remove the box you would be better off shipping it to a Suzuki specialist, or at least someone that won't charge through the nose.
I have bought a rebuilt gearbox from a guy that had a change of plans. The receipt from the rebuild was $800 for an overhaul and $300 for a new torque converter.
