Just wondering what happens when points are replaced. What will that do to the car?
Hi Littleblue.

Yeah... So who HAS got a dwell meter that will go out past 62 degrees??? (60 +/- 2)Make sure you check your timing and dwell
I haven't and can't find one for love of trying!
I haven't set my dwell "electrically" yet... - Only by gap.
Wouldn't mind a dwell meter though if anyone has any hints on where to get one!

Thanks guys. Will jot down what has been said and pass onto my mechanic.
So do you think if the points and the condensers replaced this might stop my car from stalling when I don't floor my accelerator pedal onto the floor? Is this a lengthy and expensive job?

It takes about 15 minutes including resetting the points gap. Very simply and pretty cheap.
It might solve the issue of your car stalling, or it could just cross another item off the list.

it could be a number of things making your car stall points and the condensers is just one of them

Hi Littleblue
Honestly...?
If your mechanic doesn't know about points and condensers etc... I think I'd be a little worried about him working on my car.
I can fully understand there are many people out there that have not a clue about how an internal combustion engine works and that's fine, and sure - points, distributors and condensers etc. are very "old school" by today's standards, but if this fellow is a true motor mechanic then this is pretty basic stuff...
I'd hate for you to be putting your trust in someone who talks the talk but can't walk the walk.
Best of luck.

Thanks guys again for your words of wisdom. Tez, I know what you mean about people not having any understanding about cars and trusting them. I live in tassie and it can be hard to find a good mechanic that isn't just in the trade to make $$$. My mechanic is good. He's the one that told me about the points, I just wanted to know myself. It's always good to know what guys are talking about when my car needs fixing and what else could be wrong.
Hope fully this could be the thing to fix another problem.

Hey Jermaine.
I got my carby cleaned out and Suzzy works a treat (kind of). Now it seems that she stalls if i don't give her enough throttle on the accelerator. However I was told that my points need replacing down the track and have been doing some research as you can see by the posts. Argh, its so hard to find a good mechanic. It's very frustrating. I need all the help i can get!
