Gday guys,
I was chasing a carby idle issue this arvo. in the process I was reving the engine quite a bit. upon finishing up, puting the air filter back on etc. as I gave a little rev it started making a ticking/tack,tack noise. Tryed backing out of the driveway and its lost power, is not idleing smoothly and is had to start. sounds like its coming from the head?(f8b)
Can you guys suggest whats the problem and what/where to look
Many thanks

Start with the simple things - plug leads come straight to mind. If there's nothing obvious then do a compression test, it might have dropped a valve if you were revving the nuts off it.

I took the valve cover off and checked valve clearances, all seems to be in order, nothing else looks odd.
I pulled the plugs out to do a compression(bosch super 4) check and found no 1 seemed to have molten fragments of something on the 4 tips. The inner electrode was burnt looking and not a nice clean straight top. the other 2cylinders 2,3 had relativly normal looking plugs a little dark in colour (carbon) but normal for them.
On doing a compression check I got 0psi on 1 and 2 and it was pumping on cranks between 30 and 60 on number 3 cylinder. The compression tester was new and never used before. There was no air coming out the plugs holes on testing.
when running the engine it was hard to start and did not want to idle. some noise seemed to be coming out of the carby?
Any one have any idea? :?

Or perhaps a nut found it way into the top of the Carby while the air cleaner was off and found its way into one of the combustion chambers. That might account for the tic...tic...tic and rapid
onset of the zero compression and the state of the electrode on the end of the plug. A small magnet, well secured, might retrive enough evidence to confirm or rule this possibly out, but be aware that the Magnet will try to hang on to the Iron block, make sure the piston is at the top of its stroke.

Ive pulled the engine out. Will be taking it to the mechanic in the morning and pulling apart with him to diagnose.
Looking for positives im going to get it totally re conditioned, at least that will give me piece of mind and should give some more power :)
Will keep you posted...

Ive pulled the engine out
Well, that's the "No messing about" approach!

Here's hoping it's nothing too disasterous!

Sounds like it could be a head gasket blown between cylinders

All shall be revealed soon.

When I pulled the gearbox off the engine I noticed the Trust bearing(correct terminology?)has left a bit off an identation in the clutch fingers. Is this normal or an inproper adjusted free play? i.e dragg from the bearing. The bearing rolls easy but does have a bit of surface wear from the clutch fingers.
Also can someone tell me how the "u"shaped wire that sits on/through the bearing locates on the clutch engage fingers? hope this makes sense
Thanks :thumbup1:

A bit of wear on the forks of the pressure plate is normal - it is metal on metal after all. ;)

The retaining clip for the thrust bearing should clip into a hole on one side of the bearing housing, and then go on the clutch fork.

So we pulled the motor apart this morning and there it was.
A blown headgasket between cylinders 1&2.
That explains the compression issue and also the spark plug on Cylinder 1 was the material off the head gasket.
So the rebuild now commences. The head will get sent to a specialist for some handy work and hopefully soon it will be back together.

while you have the motor apart it wouldn't hurt to bang in a new set of rings and at least big ends, and new gaskets and seals and check the welsh plugs. cost would not be that much on top of the mechanics costs.
