Ok, so I havent been looking into much with modifying my van, just trying to fix little things
My van kept getting hot ~half way on gauge, and slowly creeping up when I stopped in traffic

I took out the radiator and flushed it, had alot of sluggy crap in it
Also noticed that the radiator has abou 40% of the front row fins missing, and the rest are very brittle

My van cools down to ~2/5 on the gauge when I am moving, only starts to creep up past half way when I stop

Im planning to get a new radiator.. but my clutch fan should be working?
I tried to turn it when car was off and didnt move at all

If the motor is off, you should be able to spin the blades freely.
Sounds like your thermatic fan is siezed.

That would account for the temp rising when you're stationary and returning to normal when you're moving...

Your Rad doesn't sound to be in too fantastic shape, but I think I'd get the fan sorted and then see how it performs...

I've not done it, but I understand there are a few after-market options that work when a bit of ingenuity is used to fit them up.

Cheers

Ah right.. I thought the fan was not meant to move when the van is off??

I was thinking about wiring up a thermo fan to a temp switch, this should solve any standing still issues
Shes been pretty good so far, its very up and down. Sometimes my gauge will teeter from ~1/3 to just under half from stopping and moving, and other times it will sit on half even when im clocking 60-70kph for a long continual stretch on a cold night
When I stop, it doesnt seem to rise any more than half though, but doesnt go back down

Temp should stay in the middle. Running to cold can damage the engine.

my temp stays just below half most of the time (approx 40% across)

goes up a bit higher during freeway runs

the fan does not run a clutch
it is bolted straight to the water pump. i know this because i overhauled my maruti engine and ha dto do all this.

a thermofan should give a good performance increase. (you can hear the stock fan working. damn noisy!)
only issue with this is running a suitable shroud to match the thermo and setting it up to turn on when required. this is unlikely to help in your case as the radiator is missing a lot of fins. the thermofan may pull the air through, but there are no fins to exchange the heat

jezza: recore that radiator asap or risk doing a head gasket/sludge problems...etc
i would give the engine a good flush by removing the core plugs and sticking a hose down the top rad hose

Hey Jezza! I joined up to have a looksie, nice to find you on here. Let me know how you go with your side of things. I'm looking at drilling out the standard exhaust manifold, adding injectors and modifying an S13 SR20DET Apexi Power FC to suit the carry van EFI + Turbo. Other than that, trying to track down a SOHC F6A Turbo engine, as it should be a direct fit? Then I can play around on the F6A setup to make more power.

the efi + turbo sounds like a lot of work

speak to mick at ovaboost

he has a turbo f10a carry and can tell you what needs to be done

Do what i do on my mk2 escort. Run standard engine driven fan for normal use, run a thermo fan on a switch at front of radiator incase she gets warm in traffic, works good.

:-o I hope you made a typo and mean't to drill out the intake manifold. Throwing fuel at the turbo will probably just create anti-lag  :-o

please confirm if these are the correct lowering blocks?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LOWERING-BLO ... 19c69d8057

did you need to cut down the locating pin for them to fit?

thanks

ian
hi ian,

that lowering kit looks fine, i bought this brand
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-2-Lowering ... 43a4be5537

no cutting needed - the pin of the block goes into a hole where usually the
head of the bolt that connects the spring leafes sits.

happy lowering!

Ok guys, so the van is up and running sweet again
One more issue to solve, my van gets nearly to half way when im driving with lights ON
With lights OFF it sits about 1/4-1/3 of way down, constantly! Any ideas?
I think my thermostat is a bit bung, because it doesnt open until the temp goes a bit passed half way, must look into it
One of the lights is still factory, and the other is a non-sealed round light with a normal H4 bulb
BTW, where to buy non-sealed headlights from? I want to go HIDs or atleast xenons :D

I bought some new wheels.. 13x7", not sure of offsets, but i have a feeling they are going to be around +10 lol. Its going to be so aggressive, im just hoping that my rear doors can still open! Tossing up between black, or a fluro green haha

While wheels are off, im going to measure up the spring, and try to find the compression capacity. Then ill shop around for springs that will fit
Ive seen that s13 camber plates fit the stock carry suspension.. must look more into it

Time to get the welder out and do up a new exhaust.. not sure what stock size is, but looks to be about 1"
Pending on performance gains (going to talk to my tuner) I want to go dual exhausts, straight 1.5" or 2" tips, and may end up buying a magnaflow mid-muffler
And if i feel really keen ill CAD up some manifold plates and make a header ;)

Working some killer overtime at the moment, and got some projects going on for the house/backyard/dogs, but keep tuned!

Woohoo, fixed my cooling issue

BEWARE! An autoshop had been supplying me with the wrong thermostat!!
I got the correct one and now it sits about 1/4 way up > my temp stil crept to below half on a hot day just idling at traffic lights for about 10 mins, but generally speaking its perfect

The thermostat should start to open @ 82*C iirc
CHECK that you get the RIGHT thermostat!
The wrong one i had opened at 92*C

I noticed with the wrong one that my temp swung just past half way then opened, and would sit very close to half

On another note, i bought some 14x6 +25 Watanabes
Im going to fit them tonight, and hope they fit!!
Tyres tomorrow, checking spring diameter and length, and finding info out about kg ratings.
Going to buy lowering blocks and springs, carbon fibre f1 mirrors and hopefully can find a mini roof wing
Van also has astro turf xD
