Hi all. It seems that my turbo has kicked the bucket. I have to drive on eco mode and not go over 4k RPM otherwise I get white smoke billowing out my exhaust.

I'm looking at the Garret GT1241 as a replacement. Is this a direct bolt on replacement or are modifications necessary to make it fit? Engine is a K6A.

White smoke billowing from the exhaust is usually coolant in the cylinders from a leaking head gasket.
Are you sure your head gasket hasn't gone and the turbo is masking the drop in performance?

The coolant level isn't dropping any faster than usual and to be honest there hasn't been much of a drop in performance. I only get smoke when the turbo really starts to spool and when I take the intake pipe off the turbo I'm seeing quite a bit of oil.

I believe one of the seals in the turbo has gone and there doesn't seem to be anyone in my country who can rebuild it or find a rebuild kit.

The manifold and dump flange look similar, but I think they are the wrong orientation for the stock manifold

There are rebuild kits for the RHB31 on ebay, don't know how hard it would be to do it yourself.

I'm not sure which flange the K6A has, theres multiple varieties of RHB31

Is a rebuild something I could do myself or do you need special tools? I'm fairly technically inclined just never done anything like this before.

The Garrett GT1241 wil bolt on but the oil feed line needs to be replace with a different fitings. The problem may be that the Garrett will give a bit more boost and may not be compatible with the fuel map in a standard ecu.

Its not that hard to change the seals in a turbo and a lot cheaper so that would be the way to go.

I'm going to the US shortly and return mid November so I'll be able to pick it up then. Will post an update after I attempt the rebuild.
