F10a Timing belt tooth jump

I'm just wondering has anyone even had a tooth jump on a f10a. I recently had a over hall on my f10a and it had been running fine for the first 2 weeks, but a few weeks ago the van started to stall at the lights and runs quite rough and the engine shutters.

Thought I might as before I spend all that time again pulling everything out just to get the timing cover off.

Have you checked the ignition timing to make sure that the problem is the belt? I've stripped a belt before due to an oil leak, but never had one jump once tensioned.

Will after replacing the rubber seal on the dizzy the car will not idle now at all. It will run on the choke but as soon as chokes off, the can just shuts off. One problem after another at the moment . Could it not idle due to a blocked fuel filter ? Or if the pump was failing ?

Yes, and yes.

Could be inlet manifold leak, incorrect ignition timing, cracked dizzy cap, plug lead fail, poor fuel supply from pump or blocked jets........strange for an overhauled engine. Spray a little carby cleaner or Aerostart near the inlet manifold, while it's running. If the idle speed changes, check all bolts on carby base/manifold etc. As you said, change fuel filter, too. Cheap and easy.
Let us know how you get on. :NFI:

How do I do the timing on these vans . I only found TDC via putting a screw driver down the spark plug. After doing this the van runs ok, but that is with the dizzy turned all the way to advance I believe as if I turn it the other way it just shuts off. Also I have had to turn up the idle for it to run and it idles to high , i used to leave the choke open but that used heaps of fuel.

I want to take it to a specialist in Adelaide but can't find any yet.

Also if it is a manifold leak what is my best bet to fix it ? The manifold position is one of the stupidest I have ever seen and most of the bolts are hard to reach and one was very hard to assess when I put the manifold back on. I still managed to get every bolt tight and unused gasket glue.

The problem could be the head gasket. I'd suggest a compression test.

Sounds like you've got the dizzy one tooth out, when reinstalling it.

I hope it's not a head gasket it is brand new 3 months old.

Also it was running fine then the timing just jumped out of wack all of a sudden. Every time I manage to get it TDC the timing throws its self out after a few weeks of driving .

I have this exact same problem at the moment, just rebuilt the head and can't get it to idle normally, only on choke will it idle. It has something to do with timing/ points I'm pretty sure. I will report back after I try and fix it again *sighs* :bashhead:

make sure you have the spark plug leads on in the correct order.

Yep, was running fine then out of no where shit. And that's without even touching anything .

If the timing is erratic then it points towards a worn woodruff key, or damaged distributor.

I've just had a similar problem with my Carry, I was slowing down for a turning lane & it just stalled & wouldn't fire - it was trying to run sometimes when turning it over but then nothing. :NFI:
I'd just (5 mins of driving) filled the fueltank from a 7/11 so my first thoughts were dirty or watery fuel, I couldn't get it to run so I towed it home & lifted the seats.
After draining some fuel out I could see that wasn't the problem so checked the points, plugs, leads, vac lines, distributor cap, rotor, etc & all looked good.
I cracked the clamp bolt on the dizzy & got it to start & barely run on full retard & put my timing light on it only to find the spark was all over the place on every cylinder as well as the coil lead. I suspected the coil so I replaced it with a known goodun & the problem didn't go away.
I spun it on the starter with the dizzy cap off & saw that the spark between the points was really erratic which pointed to the power feed to the dizzy so I backtracked from the external feed wire & all the wiring looked fine & tested OK for continuity.
I swapped the dizzy with a spare I had on the shelf & Bickety Bam !! It fired straight up & ran like a Japanese Swiss watch \:D/
Upon further inspection of the old dizzy, the feed wire to the points had an internal break under the insulation so it was getting power intermittently & causing the on again - off again spark. :(

So, maybe stick a timing light on it & check the sparkage - who knows, maybe all F10A distributor power wires are programmed from the factory to self destruct around this time. :snigger:
