Not mine, but a mate's... I reckon it's the cable. I've not had to even look at my boy's handbrake since I've had it... If His cable is busted, can he get replacement parts from the likes of Repco or Autobarn?
Those who know the handbrake system intimately - Is it likely the cable? - Is there something that is known to fail - so that I can point him in the right direction.?

Sounds like a stretched cable. There are two ways to try and take up the slack - first is to adjust the shoes, second is an adjustment under the inspection plate behind the handbrake lever.

Not sure if you can still buy cables new, but you should be able to have an old one re-cored.

this happened to mine the very first time my dad drove it
hes the kind of man that slams every door, uses an axe to butter his bread, and changes gears with his fist.
he pulled up out the frontand virtually ripped the handbrake lever off.

after that he adjusted it up at the drums (pretty sure)
