On the the hub side of the lower control arm there is a pin which supports the hub. I dont know what the name for it is?
Anyway, can anybody tell me if it is possible to strip the little boot of it & remove the pin so all you're left with is the casting which is welded to the control arm?

Yeah, that would be the ball joint, and Col is right, it is inseperable from the control arm and also unable to be repaired.
If you need a new unit then SuziWest have new ones at a fair price.

What about the little rubber boots - can they be removed?

I had a look at my old ones; the boot comes off but I couldn't see a way of getting it back on.

you can buy the boots for ball joints there hard to find i think you can get them from a mini (leyland ) spare parts supplier
