should i trust them?
im looking at putting a tow bar on my porsche, now obviously being a porsche theres no fixing points and no one makes a kit, so it will have to be a custom job.
so off to visit the rta i go, they tell me i need no engineers certificate or inspection etc. just glue it on and away i goes. the guy didnt sound to confident and it seemed to be just off the top of the head. so do i trust them, or should i check with someone else? the guys at the 4wd place in town seem to think ill be needing some kind of compliance or engineers certificate.
so me=confused. help..
dodgey rta..?

Ha! Remember all the shit I went through when I installed my F8B? Well that all hinged on me taking the word of a pleb from the RTA when he said I didn't need an engineers certificate.
At any rate, you will need to get an engineers cert for a towbar if it is NOT already ADR approved, which is the case with custom made bars.

yup thats exactly what i was thinking aboot when he was goin "yeah i cant see why youd need anything if its done right.."
hmmm so custom tow bar plus engineers certificate.. $700 towbar, greeeaaat

if its fitted by a tow bar specialist he has to guarintee his work, ask him if it will pass engineering ....more to the point is the car set up to tow, sports cars as a rule aren't towing vehicles
if the car isnt designed to use a tow bar it can't be engineered

MORE BEER!
Went to RTA today to find out requirements for changing engine in mighty boy to F8B. Man behind counter said "I don't know. See the people who do the blue slips. They'll know." Then he handed me a list of the blue slip inspectors for the area.
At least he was honest! :o
I would check further than one clerk at the RTA for the tow bar.

I don't know what the actual requirements are but I took mine to the local blue slip place. They checked the new engine number, filled out the form, took $26 from me and gave me the blue slip. Then I was off to the RTA who changed the engine number on my rego and that was it.truder44 wrote:Went to RTA today to find out requirements for changing engine in mighty boy to F8B. F*ck me! You got off easy!

Blue slip inspector looked up his RTA info sheet, and told me I can ONLY have a F5A in a mighty boy, then gave me the phone numbers of 3 engineers. Tried the numbers, one doesn't exist (check the number and dial again), one doesn't do cars any more and the 3rd has been engaged every time I rang.
Given the case for the first two, I'd say the third blokes completely tied up with business!

The incompetence and inconsistencies between branches of the RTA never ceases to amaze me.
JJ can get away with a $26 fee and a shuffling of some paperwork (which is fantastic for him don't get me wrong!), and I get shafted for about $1500 and months of headaches to install the exact same motor in my ute. It is rediculous.
