Hey Colin
Thanks to Elwood I have the air con box for the Mighty Boy.
I am using the mighty boy heater/fan box.
I now have to drill the holes for the gas pipes.
When you did yours was there any easy way to locate where to drill?
And before anyone tells me to use pm for this, I thought others might be doing the same conversion and might use the knowledge.

H guys,
just wondering is someone could post some pic's of their a/c setup? and could let me know what compressor they are using?
I've searched the forum & only come up with "Central automotive products, japan, model fs 607" from one of mowog earlier posts, but i can't work out what models they were fitted to
any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Aircon in a mighty boy, that would be cool, and something my g/f has been nagging me about for a while.
I kept telling here there nowhere to put the gear & the f5a just doesn't have the power needed to drive an aircon unit. I might be in trouble now, as i have an f8b in the bay and it's almost sorted. When my g/f get's to drive it again, i know the nagging for aircon will start again. As soon as she realises she has more power under her right boot.
I too would love to know what car i could pull some gear from to make an aircon setup for my mb. I take it a pulley will need to be welded to the original bottom pulley or another bracket made & a longer single belt used to drive the aircon comp.
Which way has it been done before?
Cheers

Factory aircon existed on Alto and Hatch models, and apparently on a VERY small number of MB's as well.
The crank pulley on these motors has an extra groove for the additional belt. There are threads cast into the back of the block to hold the bracket for the aircon unit, and two holes (with rubber plugs) underneath the coil for where the piping goes into the cabin.
Personally if your missus whinges about aircon I'd make her ride in the tray, because unless you've got an engine like Colin's then aircon would reduce an F8B back to F5A output!

F8B EFI turbo - Three pots and a snail.
ROFLMFAO
I can imagine the look on her face, you want aircon love? Get in the tray!
I know the bolts on the back of the block your talking about, but didn't realise there were other mounting points as well for the piping. So i need to keep my eye open for an Alto or Hatch that had aircon & lift a few bits from it.
I could modify a factory pulley with another groove for an aircon belt if i have to.
As for the power issue, well i don't have an F8B like colin's, but i do have most of a spare F8B in the shed, all the important bits anyway. Once the F8b in my mb is running properly, i'll be hunting to hoard bits to convert the spare engine to turbo and drop into my boy.
Then i'd just have the power to run the aircon.

I don't think the make of compressor matters but you have to be sure it is the right size so it does not draw TOO much power I now when my daughters air con in her 993 cc turns on it has a severe effect altough it still drives the acceleration and takeoff is really bad.
Daihatsus also had air i have a compressor off a daihatsu turbo it is about the same size.
I haven't done anything fitting mine as i am doing up a good MB so will put it in that.

It's a possibility. The Matiz engine is an evolution or cousin of the suzuki engines that power boy's & alto's aren't they?Kartman wrote:I wonder if the Matiz compressor etc would fit?
I know where there is a couple of Matiz's in a wreckers not too far from my place, i'll take a look see, with my camera & tape measure. I would also be thinking the condenser and reciever may fit in the boy as well. I wonder about the under dash part?
As for piping it up, that would need to be custom from an aircon joint i would be imagining. But if the gear was mounted, i couldn't imagine that it would cost too much to have it all piped & gased up.

The receiver (also known as the drier) fits to the condenser it is quite a small one. NEVER use a second hand receiver unless you are absolutely sure the inlet and outlet holes were blocked off immediately on removal, even then you don't know how good it was before removal, the system may have been low on gas anyway, always fit a new one receivers tend to start to rust inside the minute they are disconnected and exposed to the air, the rust circulates through the system and damages and blocks the system. Receivers cost between $80 -$100 usually. Air con places can easily fit whatever piping you want, the usual problem is incompatible threads on the compressor and other piping.
An open A/c will need a new reciever drier regardless as they are the moister collector, and moister in the system is the worst thing for an A/c . Compressor size is also relavent to the tx valve fitted to evaparator so a mixed A/c system, ie compressor from one car and say condensor or evaparator or both from another type of car can give you all sorts of pressure issues making the system not work properly. Get the whole system from the one car fit new reciever drier, evacuate the system, pressure check and then regas. And new oil in the compressor also a must.
Sizing of components is an issue, but it you match them closly you will still get reasonable performance from it. The only part that would need any concern is the under dash part of the system. You can use comp, tx, reciever & condenser from the matiz if they all fit, and run whatever small under dash setup fits into a mb.
Some ppl may like to know there is a rather small heater & aircon combo box that is designed for hotrod's and street machine applications, you would need to google it or check Ebay. I was thinking about putting one in my torana, as it's an all in one solution, reasonably priced & fairly compact, tho i can't remember the dim's.
Recievers for some cars can be bought as low as $40ish, i paid around $40 for a brand new one for my EB Ford, but it's like way too big to use for a project like this. I imagine the smaller less common one's will be more expensive.

They should be sold with plugs or bungs in the fittings so no moisture get's in. As with any aircon component if new. Should also carry some warrenty, did you get to exchange it for another one?me217 wrote:we bought a brand new receiver once. and it was already buggered. so keep an eye out wen u buy one.
