Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to lower the rear of my 85 alto, the leaf spring seems to be on the opposite side to get a lowering block.

Cant seem to put photos up, (prob cause i'm a newbie to this site)

Thanks

Three options:

1) Reset the springs.
2) Get new springs made (Lovells, etc)
3) Flip the axle onto the other side of the springs.

Bon appetit! :D

Arctic Alto....I have an 85 Alto which I was going to lower, but haven't had time......but my son reckons he can turn the springs upside down so they curve the other way.

No idea if it will work, but he thinks it will.

Greg,

it sounds like it can be done, but do you think it will effect the handling or will the leaf still work well that way?

Cheers

Dude, I have no idea on what the handling will be like, I just wanted the look.....I have no need for super performance going through S bends.

I don't think it would be too hard to do, so try it and see what happens.

Take it for a run and just drive through a few corners at a moderate speed and see how it goes.

Mine used to handle like a bucket of shit until I put the 13 x 5.5 wheels and 165/50/13 tyres on it now it's fine through roundabouts and corners.

With the old skinny wheels and tyres, it used to get the wobbles through roundabouts.

If you try it out and all is successful, I'll get my son to do mine.

Let us know the outcome.

Reversing the spring will have a negative effect on the ride, as you're taking away the spring tension/flex that absorbs bumps.

Brayden,

Can you recommend the best value for money way to lower the rear?
That wont give to much of a negative effect.

I'm assuming my alto can use king springs for the front.

Cheers

The best value method (free) would be to try inverting the springs and see how it handles. My knowledge of parabolic springs tells me it will be rough as guts, but I could be proven wrong. ;)

Yes you can use king springs for the front.

A very good question. I have an Alto in the garage at home so I'll compare it to my MB and let you know. ;)

Hey guys,

I tried turning the springs the opposite way, but it lowers it too much :(

It was lowered about 3 1/2 inchs, which made the wheel scrub the guard just by sitting in it. It also was very stiff just by pushing on the back end by hand you could tell. having it that low it also was impossible to take my wheels off, which are 165/70/13.

I think to lower it this way, i would have to get a lowering block aswell as turning the spring the other way, so if i got a 2inch lowring block it will be lowered by 1 1/2 inch. or a 1inch lowering block to be lowered by 2 1/2 inch.

I also had two leave out the rubber bump stops as they would have been touching.

Not to mention how hard it was to get the spring out and turn it around.
(probably since they havent been taken out in a long time)

Here are a few pics.
