couldn't see a thread at first glance on these, but thought i'd ask the question... If you were to import a turbo Kei can you get them SEVS complied and registered in Australia?
how will it go with no side indicators. im pretty sure in AUS, newer cars are required to have an indicator on each front guard, which that first car has not.
Oh i know it would have to go through ADR etc, but more my question was can it be complied under SEVS, or was there a local varient that would gum up that idea?
Just a thought anyway, i mean if the late model Kei was AWD and 2 door i'd jump on it in two seconds lol. Aaaah bring back the 80's (for car design only, everything else in the 80's was rubbish wrapped in shit.)
the adrs etc were basically designed to prevent people importing used cars in competition with those well known Australian brands like Mazda and BMW etc.
so no one gets irony or sarcasm even?
the government bends over backwards to protect foreign companies who make no real contribution th Australia, but are happy to take the profits out, while the several thousand Australian people who were involved in the modifying of imported specialist cars in Australia a few years ago
get shafted out of their jobs when the government changes the rules. And even more ridiculous, the total imports were around 30,000, in an annual sales market over near a million. The numbers of imports would not even dent 1%of the total.
But we have to look after the overseas manufacturers, I note that Shell declared a profit of 35 Billion this year, while the oil companies are crying poor because they have to increase their prices due to the wicked oil producing countries.
And the latest report found no evidence of price fixing in Australia. I guess if you gon't look too hard you won't find anything.
The reason they won't find price collusion in the petrol industry is that they are looking at the retail level. The price fixing is happening at the refining and wholesale levels where the ACCC doesn't investigate.
Short answer is that you are restricted to 1988 cars, unless you bring in a personal import (and pay Import Duty on it.)
I'll be importing at least one Suzuki Kei Works through NZ when I go over there to work for a year or so. Import from Japan to NZ (or buy one which has already been imported), live in NZ and use it for a year, then bring it back here when I return.
altoworks.info now being domain squatted... joy.

Check on that oti as i am positive that you must own the car in NZ for a min of 2 yrs befor importing in to ausralia. you may be able to do it sooner than 2 yrs but i know you save a bucket full of cash after the 2 yrs has ended.
They got rid of the 15 yrs or older rule because to many companies where bringing in heavily modified cars or race cars that where not road legal and putting them straight on the road. changing this ruling really only affected the backyard importers and was designed to keep a higher quality car on our roads. if your going to do a personal import that you want complied for road use, the easiest way is to find a car in really good condition that is 100% standard.
