Don't know if i would call it a downside, the japanese grey imports have been huge in NZ for a lot longer than it has here in AUS. The cars and aftermarket performance parts that are available at an affordable price over there is massive compared to here.

Regulations for NZ import are living there 1 year with the car and using it as your primary means of transport (including log book).
