Well, guys, the 'new' MB isn't doin' so good.. I drove from Narrabundah to Latham (For you Canberrans) and it over heated..

Also, on my way up William Hovel Dr it wouldn't go any faster than about 50Ks!! I guess there is more work to be done than I had thought..

Still, freakin' cool to putt along in!!

My first MB used to spontaneously overheat. Pulled out the thermostat, chucked it away and no more problems after that.

You'll get used to constant running repairs. Heck I've spent more than the price of a new car on mine and it still needs constant attention.

Overheating could be caused by a blocked radiator or a blockage somewhere else in the system. Also check/replace the thermostat, and check the timing isn't too far advanced.

Apart from that it can really only be a blown head gasket, but that's worst case scenario.

BRAYDEN!! Don't put that thought out there!! Not a blown head gasket!

I'll take it back to the mechanic in a week or two and have him pressure test the radiator. Can I get a thermostat new or do I need to go harvest one?

Replacement thermostat isn't a problem to find, and shouldn't be more than $20 new.

Not always 100% accurate as it depends on where the head gasket is leaking but shows a blown head gasket most times.

If you start the car and get it up to running temp, take the radiator cap off, making sure the radiator is full of water. if you see small bubbles on the surface of the water, then your head gasket is definately gone.

Cheers

We'll I have4n't driven it enough to know what the 'normal running temp' of an MB is.

As I watched the temp climb I thought "I better get on Tamon and see how hot they normally run' - So, how hot do they normally run?!

Bubbles in the radiator can also be cavitation from the water pump (usually very small bubbles). Get your Mechanic to perform a CO2 (carbon dioxide) test on the radiator as well as the pressure test. Carbon dioxide emanating from the radiator generally confirms head/gasket trouble. No carbon dioxide points more toward cavitation = new water pump should fix that.
So many delays to getting my MB back in order with 993cc & 5 speed transaxle... neighbor issue gone, donor shell up on rotisserie, new sheds on the way.... another project also..
