Hi rosscorama, nope not too late, thanks for your comments...I am picking her up this w.e (25/4/09) all being well...

Was your in good nik?..
What sort of speed did you cruise at ??

Just out of interest how much fuel did you think you used??
I think the tank is about 20L so did you fill up 3 times??

The tank is 27L, and you should get about 6L/100kms on the highway. I would cruise at about 90kph - assuming the little motor can muster up the grunt.

best of luck with your trip, wish I was going to pick up my 1st MB, still havent got one.
I have a question for everyone in regards to availability and where to find parts, body panels etc, I know these little cars are hard to find but I really like them and would love to get my hands on one, but am not sure what I'm best to look for, I'm a bit of a mechanic so any mechanical issue I can fix if the parts are available, but should I steer away from any that need a lot of panel work/replacement, can new panels still be purchased?

Cheers Shaun

I think these days you're FAR better off finding a ute that has a straight, rust free body. Mechanical components are cheap and readily available, however new or straight second hand panels are rare and pricey.

I picked up my first MB in Hobart and drove it back to melb.
Was about 350 Ks through the mountains and snow then onto ferry.
Great fun! MB was in bad condition but still made it.

Second MB I bought about 2hrs out of sydney and tried to make it too melbourne :P
Drove for an hour, then the headgasket blew. limped into sydney and slapped it on a car freighter back to melb. This was a poorly built F8b turbo with std timing and no intercooler.learnt a lesson or 2 there.

But a std MB id easily drivelong distance. just keep an eye on the oil and water when you fill up fuel. and keep it on 80km/hr if your worried.

The only other thing I would suggest is a bottle of water and a gerry can of fuel. I know I can get from my place to canberra on about 1/3 of a tank but I top up from the gerry can when i have a break just to be sure.

Peace of mind is priceless.

Well i'm the proud owner of my first MB.. she is wonderful!! :D red!! ( they go faster don't they??) her body & motor are in good great condition..
I really didn't think she would make it, but she just perred along the hwy btw 90/100 km!!no probs.. seam like she was itchen to get out of the city!!.. anyway It took 9hrs to get home. and I did a visit along the way.. so total trip was 500km!!. I was pretty tired, but that was more due to a long day, as the ride is reasonable comfortable, although the seats do lay back a bit.. but a jumper stuffed in my back worked fine..and the ride was better if I avoided the pot holes!.. I suspect her suspention is shot.. anyway I made it home.. she did drop back to 20km/hr on some of the really big steep climbs.. as I live in Armidale which is on top of the great devide!.. hence the long time to get home.. I thought at one stage I might have to get out and push.. but she just chugged along...

The interesting thing was the next morning I poped the bonnet and discovered the radiator was empty!!!.. :-o but the overflow bottle was full.. :? not sure why some water was not sucked back in when she cooled down.. but I have filled her up again she seams to be running fine.. not sure how I didn't blow her up!!..

One thing I notice it the temp guage brearly moved it hovered just above the C for cool.. execpt whenI was going up the mountain.. it then moved up one more notch.. I'm not sue if that is normal?? perhaps they have taken the thermostat out?? there appears to be some blue goo (liquid gasket stuff) around the engine part where the radiator hose come our of the radiator and into the engine.. so i suspect someone has done some work on her recently.. anyway i'm stoked...
You were right I brokenshire I should have taken water and fuel.... than god or after hrs.. card swipe fule stations!!!
but I'm very happy with her peformace.. I hope she stays ok for a long while yet... :D :D :D

Hi Utie.
Well done - 500k's not a bad trip at all :D
Do yourself a favour - DONT use water in the radiator - buy a 5lt bottle of pre-mixed coolant and tip that in and never use just water :x .
Water will cause the head to corrode and you dont want that :-o
Good luck with the boy...

Cheers

So the adventure continues...
