Help please!
I have bought a F5A Twin Cam from an Alto Works from John in Adelaide(kcarking) for the HOLK. I have only bought the engine without the gearbox. Can anyone tell me if a "normal" F5a box fits and if it is OK? I was reading another post, and Brayden mentioned you can put a F8B? Is the F8B better?
Another small question. Would anyone know if the engine mounts are the same as F5a/F8B? (I have not received the engine yet).
All help appreciated!!

Yes you should be able to use a 4 speed box so long as you use an upgraded clutch. F8B would be much better because the ratios are taller.
The F5A turbo motor mounts completely differently to a standard MB motor or F8B. The turbo motor uses a single cradle under the sump, instead of the standard two runner cradle in an MB.
Here are some pics to give you an idea:

Well my mechanic is a genius!! He managed to mount the F5A Turbo DOHC using the original engine mounts (and F8B gearbox). He has slightly modified, for clearance with the intercooler, the top central engine stabiliser, but everything else is original. Due to the intercooler hose, the radiator had to be modified with top entry been to the left, and because it was f#*ed, he had to replace the core, but otherwise all original.
Next week I will try to do all the electrics (thanks Grant4561 for the ECU wiring specs) and hope to be on the road by end of the week.
As soon as I will pick it up, I will do few pics if anyone wants to have a look on how he did it.

Hey, thats great news, cant wait to see it

the engine side where all the timing is,
I've used a factory F5A/F8B engine cradle and fits on the F6A FWD Engine
If your using a 4speed standard box, all the other mountings will line up without a hitch.
If your using the jap 5speed, you will need to knock up custom mounts on the gearbox side of the engine bay

That's exactly what I have done.
Kept the F8B gearbox and utilised the original cradle. The only mod my mechanic has done is re-routing the oil lines for the turbo (from the top) to be able to use the top-right engine stabiliser.
In all a very easy installation

hi.
sorry i am a bit lost. so will the F5A Twin Cam from an Alto Works fit straight into mighty boy. i am about to start doing this converison and using a 5 speed box, do fuel line's need to be made bigger if anyone has any tip's that would be great.
thanks chris

Not sure about the mounts for the 5 speed. If it mounts on the original mounts, then it is a straight fit.
The only things you need to modify are:
- Route the oil lines for the turbo from the top (over the rocker cover) to allow the right engine steady
-Modify the top central engine steady(cut and weld backwards) to clear the intercooler
-If you have not done it already, change the fuel pump ( a solid state from repco should do the job. I had it already and I am yet to try if it will suffice).
Wiring is the real bitch: If you are using the alto works cluster is not that bad. You just need to graft some of the lines to the MB loom. If on the other side you are using either the MB cluster (or an aftermarket as I have done) the job is a lot harder as you need to know what goes where.
In all it is not a huge job. As soon as I pick up the car from the electrician next week I will post a full step by step article with pics.

You don't "need" to upgrade the fuel lines, but I would strongly recommend it. The return line isn't nearly big enough for EFI.
The 5 speed gearbox isn't a direct fit either.
