Baffles for all!

The midbass ones aren't finished yet. I'll be making the front sloped into the cone. Possibly even extending it out further to make a diffuser of sorts ;)

Tweeter baffles are done, just need to cover them with whatever material I end up using. The tweeters sit into the baffle a little. The aim is a flush mount which should be achieved once the material goes on to bring it up to the same height as the tweeter.

Thanks everyone for the 'motor'-vation (broom broom) :D

Did a bit of grinding today so it would fit back onto the mounts etc (few drags of resin in the way here and there) and also cleaned up the centre edges to prepare for mounting of the cluster.

Here's how thick the fibre glass is:

Nice and thick to make up for all the bubbles!

I'll hopefully get cracking on the kickpanel bases and attach the plastic-cluster-outer-thingo to the dash on saturday.

:)

P.S: The blutac on the a-pillar is not permanent :P

It's the weekend again! That means I've done some more work :) Today it was time to start on the kick panels.

Here's the prep. Just regualr old alfoil taped down to keep the glass from sticking to the car:

After some fibreglass, letting it dry:

I also quickly chucked down a bit of extra matting on the passenger side of the dash to try and even it up. I was using the leftover resin from the kicks so it was a bit of a half-assed effort but it helped somewhat.

I now need to think about getting this cluster in and also designing a console for the gearstick and handbrake. Definately going to have cup holders! I'll head down now and have a look at the cluster position and maybe get some work done. Oh and also the bit below the cluster that will hold the headunit.

:)

P.S: I think the left hand mold might be stuck to the chassis

Out of the car now:

I'll trim them to shape during the week 'cause I have an assignment to do now

I need to make new baffles for the mids too so might do that during the week. Also need to buy a hot-glue gun.

:)

Thought I'd let you guys in on (hopefully) one of my main secrets to success. Aperiodic enclosures! Basically they flatten out the impedance curve of the speaker (varying resistance, not always 4/8ohm like the specs state) so it's a nice even load for the amp. Which makes the amp very happy and stable. Best comparison I can think of is like trying to sing standing still or trying to sing jumping up and down.

An aperiodic mat, in my case squashed fibreglass insulation, impedes and as such flattens out any bumps in the curve (which I'm lead to believe the Morel Elate has a rather nasty one around 400Hz :(). The downsides are less volume and less low end extension which should be no problem at all due to having high powered amps and no need for <30Hz to be produced at extreme volumes.

The front and rear wave-fronts need to be kept completely seperate and so the rear portion, after travelling through the mat, need to be vented somewhere. That somewhere is outside in my case due to not having a boot. It just so turns out that the Mighty Boy comes well equipped for aperiodic enclosures  First photo shows the hole for the midbass vent and the second one for the sub:

That second photo brings up a whole other issue... RUST! Need to get that sorted when the paint is done  I'll need to do tests to make sure no water is going to come down that hole.

Running the sub in an aperiodic enclosure is still slighty up in arms but is 80% likely. I just need to sort out how structually sound it is to be bolting a sub to the windsreen sill bit :P I'm also slightly worried about increased volumes outside of the car from venting outside. I like to listen loud and would generally like to contain that to inside the car rather then disturbing others.

I'm home most arvos and I try to spend most of the weekend working on the car. PM me or call (you still have my number yeah?). I'm more than happy to give anyone a run-down of what's going on in person but I don't think people will find it very exciting until it's making noise :)

Ahhhhhhh!

I'm frustrated :) I bought a hot glue gun and wasted a whole stick trying to make my cluster sit steady in the dash. Never happened. So I'm going to try again tomorrow and hopefully work it out.

I'm also frustrated at the baffles and how i'm making grills for them. I've mostly got the midbass idea sorted so that's fine but I now have to re-design the tweeter ones as well. Hopefully I can add on to the exsiting framework. I'll post up tomorrow arvo with the results.

Thanks for the kind words too.

:)

Sorry 'bout the shit photo. Made new baffles for the mids today and I still don't like them. So tomorrow I'll work on something else and I'll come back to the baffles next weekend with fresh ideas. I'll try and get this cluster madness sorted tomorrow.

:)
