cv joint

Hi one of my cv sticks is making alot of noise and its giving me the *****
Its so bad i cant hear the cd player/radio going over about 50k meaning it sounds terrible besides soundproofing the whole car which i will do eventually
can i take this thing apart and smooth it or something.

Just buy a set of exchange reco driveshafts. Simple, easy and not very expensive. ;)

There are 4 CV joints on your car, one on the ends of each driveshaft. They are a prick to try and change, so you're better off just exchanging your dud set for a pair of reconditioned shafts and installing them.

I was quoted about $150 for the pair. Of course you'd want to be sure the noise is the CV joints and not something else like a shot wheel bearing.

yea right .. a prick to change is a huge understatement ... i have broken 4 damn circlips trying to get ONE little blighter back on

whereas a reco driveshaft (its a swap job so you give them your old one) costs about as much as buying 2 new cvs and is much simpler to change (involves 4 extra bolts around the wheel area and a small crowbar)

cheers, I think i will put a new set a bearings in first and then see.

The noise ocurs in a straight line and when turning right but when i steer left it goes smooth and quiet. Just how i want it, always .

Here is a question ? why do the revs change when i turn my lights on
is this normal or is something not working fully ?
Also I have now discovered after not using my car for 2 days the frikin batery goes flat on me.
I think I need a new alternator but something must be shorting too i guess .

Im fairly suret this is because the lights are drawing their power from the battery and the alternater needs to replenish the battery, so the engine needs to work harder to get the power to the lights and whatever else you are running.

heres the way you test your CV joint

1) find a large open area (carpark is normally good)
3) stop
2) turn the wheel all the way to the right and start accellerating forward
3) stop
4) turn the wheel all the way to the left and start accellerating forward


if you hear any ticking/clicking noises then the cv is shot

if it ticks whem you turn right .. its the drivers cv
if it ticks when you turn left its the passenger cv

I reckon it's always best to change them both because if one is dead, there's a fair chance the other won't be too far behind...
And if you do them both you know they're both good and will last for another however many thousand k's. :wink:
