As posted in another thread i got a new engine for my mightyboy out of an old hatch all in bits and me having no car skill at all i hit the net the forums and the workshop manual for ages and i managed to build my engine done the lot pretty much ground up only thing i didnt have to put together was the block rest was in bits... took me about 6hours of reading and fidling to teach my self how to get the damn timing right... but the engine being old and not having a full rebuild just new gaskets etc it has a small problem the is smoke pissing out the port on the top of the rocker cover and well it dosent run to well... any ideas... things i can think of are rings valves or oil filter... im getting a compression tester off a mate in the next few days to run over it and check the compression so i can figure out if its the rings that are screwed if anyone has ideas of what else i should check or if anyone has had a simalar problem i need a little help

You won't find out much without a wet/dry compression test mate, so we'll just wait till you've done that and see hey.

But you're on the money, it will either be rings/piston, or valves/seals.

I had the same problem when i had what was believed to be a cracked piston skirt, a LOT of blow-by and a nice rattling which turned into a grinding...

Solution, new engine...

excessive smoke from the breather = too much blow by pass the rings time to rebuild the motor

I rebuilt my hatch 6 times before i got it all right .
If i had done some tests like a wed/dry compression test first then it would have been easier.
so do all that to make sure u dont waste your time on a wrecked engine but id say u need new rings .

If the motor has been sitting for a while it is possible the ring grooves are clogged with dry carbon/oil. Giving them a good clean out by pulling the rings off and cleaning the grooves out often works.
