I had a look under the bonnet of a Holden Barina the other day... and found a few stickers saying suzuki on them... can anyone explain plz? i know that cars can be rebadged..

All Barinas until the late 90's were Suzuki Swifts re-badged as Holdens. The most recent incarnations of Barinas are Opels.

Holden don't build a great deal of their lineup...

It was actually the early 90's Josh - 93 to be exact. 1985 - 1992 the Barina was a Suzuki Swift, from 93 it became an Opel Corsa

Holden pretty much rebadge everything except the Commodore, and variants of it.

Holden Gemini - Isuzu Gemini
Holden Vectra - Vauxhall Vectra
Holden Barina - Suzuki Swift / Opel Corsa
Holden Rodeo - Isuzu Rodeo
Holden Jackaroo - Isuzu Jackaroo
Holden Drover - Suzuki Sierra
Holden Astra - Nissan Pulsar / Opel Astra
Holden Cruze - Chevrolet Cruze (Based on a Suzuki Ignis)

the list goes on...

The VB commodore was a rebadged 4-cylinder opel too... Opel Monza rings a bell...

I knew that the VT Commodore was based off an Opel Platform, but didn't realise that the phenomenon went so far back. Here is another link to the old VB Commodore / Opel connection:

I had always been of the impression that Holden actually had a hand in the design of these vehicles, but once again I am amazed at the fact that everything is based on pinching other lego pieces from GMC partners and cutting and shutting everything to assemble some form of bastardised "Australian" car.

So what have Holden actually designed and built exclusively themselves?

Besides the venerable 253ci and 308ci cast iron block V8s?

...which i'm led to believe were based on pre-WW2 Chevrolet flathead engines, modified for OHV operation.

I think you'll find Holden hasn't fully designed anything since the old FJ's Grey motor. (and even then I wouldn't be suprised if they pinched bits for THAT too... )

Incidently getting back to the original topic, the Swift was also rebadged as a "Chevrolet Sprint" and also "Geo Metro" , having the G10 turbo 3-cylinder engine fitted as standard. But i figure everybody already knew that...

Gee, I would have been more sceptical of the early Holdens, given the company's beginnings as an importer-assembler for GM.

Actually Chevs have pretty always had OHV motors, except back in the early teens or twenties. They had an OHV V8 in about 1918, which had open valve train (no rocker covers) and ran a total loss oil sysem, the greenies would love that!
The Opal was very much modified to become the Commodore, there is practically nothing that is interchangeable. Holden are not orphans in the art of badge engineering most brands do it.

yeah, i have a gemini, ive you have seen the first model gemini's they have a badge on the back that says "Holden-Isuzu" all gemini's have an iszuzu G161z 1.6ltr engine in them stock, many people put G180z 1.8ltr and G200z 2.0ltr engines in them from the 80s rodeo's and jackeroos

Don't forget the "Pontiac Firefly" - also a rebadged Swift, along with the "Subaru Justy" in Europe.
