Although they appear similar, they are completely different. Same story as an F5A and F8B SOHC.

so the blocks and internals are totally different? what about bolt on things like manifolds? just so no confusion, im talking about both dohc variants, the F5a has 547 stamped on the block and the f6a has F6a stamped, is that right?

ok forget the f6a for the moment, what are the differences between the f5a dohc and the f5b dohc? can either be taken out to 720cc with the use of the 68mm pistons?

No, there simply isn't enough meat on the block to bore that far.

thanx mate, i kept getting told my engine was the f6a, but its actually the f5b dohc, which i thought it was all along, what can u bore these out to safely? i have noticed u can get head gaskets for 67mm for the f5b, would that be pushing the limit? do u know the standard bore size of the f5b dohc?

the f5b block is poo and matches nothing, the head is same as f6a
EDIT: ok, the block gaskets are the same as f6a

which parts you mean?
water pump iirc yes,
manifolds yes
timing belt yep
oil pump, think no

Note: most of my findings are based on part numbers, yet to check stuff physically

Thanx goofy, would it be worth finding an f6a and building that nice and strong as opposed to building the f5b? And if I do the f6a what about gearbox bolting up and gear ratios etc? Really want to keep it awd
