Hi Everyone, been meaning to do this write up for some time now. The names' Mike and I've been trawling the forum for the last year now.

The story of how I got the Mighty Boy to begin with is one worth telling. It all starts with a same-sex couple from the township of Mangalore, Tasmania... but that can be for another time. Basically the story went that it had been un-registered beneath a tree for the last 20 years and for the last 3 years she had been a paddock-basher... here's what that looks like - those of you who are wondering:
The best Mighty Boy I could find for sale in Tasmania...

Ohh... So that's what a 543cc motor with a 2 speed auto box looks like... Ookay.

Incase you're wondering, there aren't any redeeming photos that explain why I bought this...

So... Yeah... that was the only Mighty Boy I could find for sale in Tasmania after 3 months of searching... So I bought it! This is a tale of triumph and woe, but ultimately my struggle to come to terms with the truly ridiculous little car that I've given so much to. TBC in the next 20 mins or so while I write.....

My initial plans for the Boy were to at least get a 4 speed manual box and hopefully source a nice little 800cc motor for it somewhere down the line. A thorough investigation of the little bea-ute revealed the following: She ran like s**t for many reasons.

Goats had annihilated the roof,
Karate practise had taken place on the tail-gate,
Carbie was all choked with oil and the whole block was thick with the stuff,
Top engine mount was shot,
No keys and the ignition barrel had been made to work with a screw-driver as a result.
Wiper-linkage had deteriorated,
The car had driven over a boulder/tree stump that had re-modelled the floor pan and frontal bodywork on the P/S,
Dash was all cracked,
I had no Sound System,
Cheap electric fuel pump had been fitted (with a cable tie to a heater hose might I add)
Someone had used double-digit grade sand paper on the outside then left it to rust,
The fuel tank was internally rusting and contained actaul gravel,
Whole bunch of stuff was missing,
Seats were beyond economical repair
Suspension + brakes were all good,
Needed a D/S inner CV Boot,
I didn't have a roof-lining
Tyres were shot,
Battery wasn't great,
Exhaust was 'good',
Body was... well, yeah...,
Needed a windscreen (was a saga + 1/2 to get one in Tassie),
My free time for the next ten years was gone and what have I gotten myself into?

The Answers:

Flush the tank then convert and paint the inside,
Blow out the fuel lines,
All new filters,
Re-connect the original pump on the block,
Carbie cleaner and a spray gun cleaning set followed by an oil catch can,
New CV Boot,
New Windscreen
A lot of filler, a white under-coat and a Ford Elecric Orange pearlescent paint-job.
Full new ignition set-up (coil, condenser, 9v ballast resistor, HT Leads + Plugs)
Pay the vacuum system a visit,
Extensively flush the cooling system,
Source the other missing bits and pieces.

But first! Get onto that Bodywork. I had 10 days with the Missus gone and no work on... Aching back and forearms + a few home-brews later:
A box or two of Wet + Dry later.

Slightly cleaner with a little spit-shine

Some rather Shag-a-delic carpet I had lying around.

Loom and coil etc... back in.
Loom and coil etc... back in.
Serious progress but it then sat there a long time waiting for the new engine and trannie etc... that until last week never materialised. Will try to continue tomorrow. Not sure as to how much detail is expected/needed, I'm sure someone'll tell me :naughty: :compulsive use of smilie:

Man!
I like your style, your determination, your reckless abandon of fiscal propriety and the colour. :)
By all means - Keep us posted of your progress! :thumbup2:
From all accounts, it would seem the car will eventually roll out a winner.

Cheers Tez, always nice to get some feed-back from the MB Team. I'm not exactly planning on doing anything ground-breaking to the Boy, just getting this one back from the dead has been a big enough challenge!

So the build as published up till now brings us up to the beginning of April 2012. I'm from Scotland btw, moved out here this year.

Oookay, where were we... April 2012. Ohh yeah, so went back to Scotland for 6 months where I bought a 10 year old ambulance at auction and converted it to a camper (another story, another time) then came back and got straight back into me Mighty Boy, I think I'd been back in Oz for four days or something and I had her off the farm and at the in-laws place to get the job done.

Starting issues: At this stage I had given up hope of ever finding my desired engine package and I'm Scottish, so I'm too tight to go and buy one online and pay to have it shipped out so that was out of the question. Anyway! I couldn't get a spark and with everything brand spanking on the ignition side of things, I knew I'd wired the coil wrong... but how?! It took me ages and eventually the search function revealed that the "B" terminal on the original 3-post coil didn't mean "Ballast" as in 'Ballast Resistor' But "B" for "Bypass - you tool" meaning the B terminal puts 12volts through the coil during start-up to accommodate the drop in voltage caused by all the electricity being needed at the Starter Motor (Thank You Brayden). That explained why the engine would start and run until I backed the key off... Fun and games, eh?

Thanks Brayden, your word carries quite a lot of weight around here so it's pretty cool to be getting some positive input from ya. I've tapped into your knowledge many a time over the last year or so, through the search function and just trawling through random threads and that. A big thank you mate, you've helped make it posible.

I promised another update but it'll have to wait until the morning, hopefully in time for anyone checking the Projects section at the weekend. See y'all in the morning!

Hey Matty, yeah I'm keen to get my MB on the road in the next month so she'll be getting registered and roadworthied with her f5a 2 speed auto in there. She's close to ready at the moment but there's just a last couple of things to do before she'll be ready.

So here's the last little flurry of photos that brings this build thread up to current day... and we all know what that means.....

Entertaining Photo Time!!!!

So the plan now is to get the car on the road as an f5a 2 speed auto and stick this little puppy in there over Winter, I'll be sticking my research into the swap process and doing the engine swap build when it comes into here:

Again, thanks for reading! You can expect more on this thread in the next couple of weeks. Until then, you stay classy San Diego

Thanks buddy! The G10 install's going to be the Winter project, just getting it registered as is (543cc 2 speed auto yawnmachine). Yeah, the Air Con's kinda funky, was installed in the MB when I got it although the pipe that goes from the lowr P/S of the radiator to the line into the cab is missing?... There's a radiator specialist in town that can sort that for me though. And have to agree that it would be good to get stuck in before you die... preferably well before so you can enjoy it :thumbup2:

Quick update - Scored a pair of MK3 Swift GTI rear disc hubs. Great condition - from a vehicle that was wrecked for the engine. Came complete with some brake cables + a prop valve which may or may not get used. I'm really looking forward to this one.
Rear axle from the Swift GL above.

The only part (or cluster of parts) that I haven't yet removed is the rear axle of the MB, so I have no idea as to how similar the MKI Swift rear axle in the picture is to a MB one... I know that the Driveshafts are a straight swap which got me thinking that the rear axle must be the same width... Brayden has advised that this may not be the case. If not - at least I have an axle to make a lightweight trailer with... :) Scored a towbar from a MK1 Swift GTI recently too! Been having a good run of things on the parts front!

The rear axle is about 14cm too wide, so you'd have fun trying to fit it under the rear of an MB!

... Point taken... Could be cool though... Jokes! Lol, looks like I'll be building that trailer after all! :D Like I said, the only section of my MB not in need of any attention was the rear axle, all the suspension, brakes and bushes etc... were in great condition. Kind of surprising until I realised the boy only has 28,000k's on the clock, I reckon the was still on orgiginal tyres when I bought her! (As a f**ked up banger of a wreck.........)

I'd be surprised if anything made of rubber was in great condition after sitting in a paddock for two decades.
