I was just marvelling the other day at how well my current f5a has faired since I've bought it.
It was a low km engine when it was installed, and since then it has done no less than 120,000 in two different mightyboys. The bottom end rattles a bit when she's got thin oil in herand she leaks a bit now, but other than that she's operated faultlessly since I've had it. It isn't even blowing any smoke yet. Quite amazing for such a small motor I think.
Anyone topped 200,000 with one of these? - it doesn't count if it's been pulled apart for reasons other than regular servicing.
How long has your 5fa lasted?
I forgot to add that my MB had 115k on the clock when I bought it. The first engine was smoking and died from head probs at approx 125k.
I guess that's why I'm so impressed with this eng - the fact that it's lasted longer than the origional one did.

wen i got my boy it had almost 200 on it. bout 199900 i think. i dont no if the engine been rebuilt or not but i knew the engine was dead. so in went a f8b.

154563k's on the clock and still counting.
As far as i know my car still has the stock F5A from the factory too.
Blowing a little smoke now but hopefully it'll hold out until the new engine goes in.

My old MB had 115,000 on it when we bought it (on original motor, verified from service history). We ran it up to about 140,000km. . .we then sold it to a friend and it's now done just under 190,000. . .on the original F5.
What's even better (or at least, more amazing) is that it's last 50,000km have been done with pretty much NO maintenence - same plugs and points and one oil change. No smoke, starts first go, doesn't rattle and gets driven about 80km daily, loaded down with crap, at 100km/h.
Maybe they're a reasonably tough engine after all!

My MB was bought with 120k on the clock and I took it to 150k before melting a hole in piston #1.
F8B EFI turbo - Three pots and a snail.
heh, interesting to find out that they can actually be tough little motors.
Mine cops a real hiding each and every day. Most of the time it is foot flat to the floor & high revs...
A mate of mine recently bought a vw (?) type camper in france and he reports it's first service is at 45,000km. No oil change or anything before then.

Christ, no! Gawd, the new owner can hardly be bothered filling it up with fuel, let alone doing a timing belt!mowog wrote:pete hope the timing belt has been serviced.
It had been done just before we bought the car (100,000-ish) so I guess its due about now. . .be interesting to see if it goes pop, wont it?

My mb has about 126k on the clock, got it at about 95k, it's not the original engine, it was an import and i don't really know how many kms on it, but my g/f left the oil cap off & starved the engine of oil, the conrod bearings are noisy & not great, but it could probably live another 15k kms or so.
As some of you know, i tried to source & still don't have bearings for it, 32mm journal size instead of 38ish, so i bought an f8b i'm in the middle of working on now.
I'm sure if i could get bearings, the little f5a would turn to more than 150k. It was blowing a little smoke when cold, but i think that's from the top end, not the rings. I'd rather a f8b in it anyways.
Cheers

Ours has original 63,000kms same owner. I will be changing the oil in engine and auto and putting new oil fileter on engine. Not to sure if I should play with the plugs and carby just yet?
