Haha, i know, I'm in the same boat! But yeah, asking questions is the only way you are gonna learn how to do this stuff!Kel wrote:dam yr 12 takes up so much time that i could be spending doing other things
ideas for a quick n cheap audio upgrade
Garry. Nuff sed!
ceej how have u got it all wired up to power all that ?? im still tryin to figure out how/where all the wiring for amps go... i got the general idea from helpin my bro put in his sound system into his lil excel, he has the most chronically annoying high pitched whine tho !! gah drives you insane lol excuse the pun

At the moment its just wired up basically untill i have a few spare monies to spend on amps... The speakers are just connected to the HU and the subs are connected to an amp which is connected to the HU through the auxiliary sends. Fairly basic and easy to do. Once i get new amps and a new HU and speakers ill be as happy as a pig in shit!

1 RCA preouts << is that for the sub ?? (checking cause i wanna put this headunit in asap once i buy it but i dont wanna get the wrong one !!)
Front AUX IN << ??

This is probably caused by running the rca's alongside the power cabling. try to seprate power cables from signal cables as much as possible.Kel wrote: he has the most chronically annoying high pitched whine tho !! gah drives you insane lol excuse the pun
The set-up mentioned earlier would simply be the headunit rca's plugged into the 4channel amp. Then channels 1 and 2 running the splits/coaxials (splits are better as coin said) and the 3rd and 4th bridged to run the sub.
If you wanted to put the 6x9's in as well you could run them off the high-level out's from the h/u, although i'm sure there are drawbacks to doing so.
With the h/u try to get one with atleast 2 pairs of rca's, then you can run them to the amp. If you get a h/u with 1 pair then you will have to buy rca splitters and you'll lose quality (like me

eep, hope that makes sense/is correct.

With the splits the tweeter is run off a crossover, so basically the power to the speaker comes into a crossover and the channel is split int hight and low frequencies and then sent to the corresponding speaker (woofer/tweeter)
Yeah RCA out to sub (i say auxiliary sends cause I'm used to using it in live sound situations...) If you are using the amp to power the speakers as well there is just channels on the amp to hook the speakers up to so you don't need to hook them up to the HU. The way i have it, the speakers are just connected to the regular loom on the bck of the HU so they are only running at 45w
. Hence the want for new amps...

alrighty so the RCA outs are so you can plug an amp into the hu ?? whats the diff between RCA and AUX ??
RCA input/output ?? can someone explain that for me plz ?? output is to run "info" (what is it called ?? signal ?? frequencies ??) to the amp to tell which speakers to play what ?? if i run splits where does the frequency crossover come from ?? do like all amps have them ?? i know higher end hu have em ?? can you run more then 1 RCA out to 1 amp ?? what would that achieve ?? stronger response or something something ??

To make my suggestion perfectly clear:
- Buy a head unit with 2x RCA pre-outs. One pair will give a signal for the front speakers, and the other for the sub. The power output of the head unit itself (4x50w, etc) is irrelevant when you are using an amp to power everything.
- Get some decent front splits that have a FULL crossover, not cheap ones with an in-line high pass filter.
- Buy a 4 channel amp that has both high and low pass frequency filters, that way you can set it to high pass the fronts, and low pass the sub.
- If you still want to use the spare 4-way 6x9's, then you can stick them behind the seats, but run them straight off the head unit at a lower volume, just for rear fill.
I always say you are better off having less gear that is good quality, than having more gear that is cheap quality.

hehe thats why we have MBI always say you are better off having less gear that is good quality, than having more gear that is cheap quality

thanks for everything !! i think ill be able to buy what i want now and not get my pants pulled down over the price now !!
if anyone knows somewhere where i can either order new shocks, or get the stock ones resleeved id really appreciate the help !! (in NSW prefeerably) i was looking at some 86 SA Swift ones for the front but the mags that are on my MB now scrape just a bit (the Swift's shockys lower the front end an inch ??) so im hoping if i get the stock ones resleeved that will lift the body up just a tiny bit more(only scrape at full lock when im turning, and big bumps

thanks again for all your help !!
On Sunday had a mate come around and we took the old head unit out of my mightyboy but with my new headunit it doesent have the harness so we went into autobarn and they didnt have any suzuki ones but i went to supercheap and they had a suzuki one but it looked totaly different to the one i had on my old one! so i didnt buy it. But meet a bloke today just moved into my town and he was a car audio installer!
and he has just moved into a house around the corner hes coming to have a look at it on thursday and hes pretty keen on puting a sub an amp on the bench seat but it was running pretty neat off the old headunit with a cheap pair off 6x9 speakers behind the seats! do you think i should get another set of speakers for the front of the car? and with the sub i dont want something that will blow the Mb to bits! not real keen on spending big bucks on this! any suggestions?

A pic of a girl on the bonett doesnt mean that my MB is a mighty girl!

ROFL @ the massage chair.
What sorta gear does that mighty boy have & how's it hooked up?
I've got a reasonable sounding & reasonably loud system in my ford, altho it's rather basic atm.
2 x 6" 2 ways, Kenwood slim mount, one in each door - run from head unit
2 x 6x9" 3 way Sony Xplod's, one each side on parcel shelf, run from head unit ( were originally in torana )
1 x Clarion 12" sub in a small sealed sub box
1 x Clarion 200W 2 channel amp, has RCA & high inputs
1 x Pioneer head unit, MP3, flip down face, 50w x 4 & 1 set of RCA pre outs
All up that's cost me just under $1000 over the last couple years. I had all the amp & speaker wiring lying around, it was to be fit to my torana, but i used it for the ford instead. I've still got my 200W cheapo amp & 200W 12" Sony sub somewhere, gotta love moving house & loosing things.
For the 'boy, i've half built a custom console to mount a cd player, 15w x 4 iirc, have a spare pair of Kenwood 6x9" to go into the boy. My g/f isn't into car audio much, so i think that will be loud enough for her. Time will tell.
Cheers
