Does it still come with the mattress?
Anything else taken out or added from the previous owner?
Also, does it have air con?
And how is the 2nd gear going, any crunching thats bad?

If it was an engine failure don't sweat it too much, the engine is only a glorified MB F5A with some EFI gear strapped on - it will be no hassle to rebuild it!

I've decided not to wreck it but do an engine transplant. Thanks for the help, yes the van must live on. Any ideas on what engine and gearbox will fit without too much hassle that I can get my hands on? K10A??
Your help will be much appreciated in getting the Carry back on the road, and hopefully with much more power.

Okay, the tricky thing about doing an engine swap is that the "standard" variety of FWD motors won't really fit because of the completely different designs of intake and exhaust manifolds.
If you're looking for a minimum fuss swap, get your hands on an F6A and use the existing F5A manifolds and box. Then it will just be a matter of getting an aftermarket or piggyback ECU to run it. That would net you close to double the current power.
I would probably swap to an Aussie delivered Carry 5 speed box though, as I found the gear ratios of the JDM box to be very short.
Actually this engine would be an option too:

Or you could do what I had planned on doing, and use an F8B block with shot peened rods and offset pistons (or semi forged Weiscos) and use that as a basis for more power.
Oh, and trust me, if you seal off the top half of that intercooler, you'd notice a massive increase in useable power and torque.
You won't need to go ballistic with power though, as all the stereo gear makes the van REALLY top-heavy, and with too much juice you're guaranteed to roll the bastard! At the end of the day it is a cruiser, not a sports car.
