Just wondering what people are able to get out of their MBs in terms of speed and acceleration. Obviously with such a small engine I'm not expecting that much, but I'm thinking that mine might be a bit lackluster. Generally speaking it's a huge struggle to get much over 60 km/h and even getting to that point can be a bit of a mission. I managed to get the bad boy to 80 km/h on the freeway yesturday but that involved a little bit of an incline.
I'm curious as to what kind of speeds other people's machines are capable of?
Performance expectations from a 550cc MB?
Stock MB should be able to clock off the speedo on the flat. I'd suggest giving the mechanicals a good service and tune and see how that goes.

My MB is a bit temperamental. Some days it easily does 100km/h and on others struggles to get to 90. Seems to perform best with a full tank rather than empty. mmmm maybe a tank removal is immanent.
Headwinds are a complete pain! Oh and so are hills!
I'd say there is something drastically wrong with yours.
Start with the basics. timing, points, plugs, carby.
The max I've ever got is 105km/h on the freeway.
I've had V8s for most of my life and performance is one thing but gee I love the fuel economy.

Alright, sparkplugs I can do! With timing are there any tests I can do beyond just inspecting the belts?Ralf the RR wrote:I'd say there is something drastically wrong with yours.

Hate to be a total beginner, but does anyone have detailed information on points? Not really sure what I'm doing with them and there isn't much out there on the net.
Two words mate - workshop manual. But to start you off:
- Replace plugs & leads
- Replace points and adjust to .018" using feeler gauge
- Inspect rotor button and cap (Replace if worn out)
- Adjust timing using timing light - 10 degrees BTDC
- Replace fuel filter (located in front of rear passenger wheel)
- Inspect carby for dirt build up/damage. Remove and service if necessary.
If that sounds like too much work then give the list above to your mechanic.

Performance expectations? -> About none!
Well actually the only performance expectation i have of my 543 is fuel economy. And my F8b is heaps faster & doesn't seem to use anymore juice at all.
Cheers

Does anyone know of a 'bolt on' EFI option for an F5A?
I would like to convert mine to EFI to try and make it a little smoother and more efficient.
If there isn't a bolt on option, is there anything that comes close?
Thanks
Dave
