My MB is an F5a with a "3 pin coil"me217 wrote: that would make sense as the f8b coil is a 3 wire thing and the f5a coil is only a twin wire thing. so the 3 pin coil goes with the twin wire starter and the 2 pin coil goes with the single wire starter.

Only 83-85 Hatch models should have the 2 pin coil and starter.

If the car is not in neutral (or park) then the starter solenoid doesn't energise.
Can't remember if the second terminal requires an earth or 12V.
Either way, a wire must be connected.

Need Help
Ive just finished swapping the F8b in the Mb and I seem to have a problem with the starter motor and or battery.
I tryed starting and sometimes the motor would turn then it wouldnt. I thought maybe a connection or earthing problem.
I have an auto f5a and the starter motor has the 3 wires Main power from battery and 2 little ones.
The black/green wire energises when the assceories is in the on position. What sort of voltage should I be getting on this wire?
I was getting around 7-8 volts.
My headlights still work but my battery voltage is around 12.1 v when I have the headlights on it drops to 11.3v
I know voltage is not always an accurate indicator because it may not be able to crank the motor/push the current.
Could the battery be the problem?

Sounds like you haven't connected the earth to the gearbox properly.
F8B EFI turbo - Three pots and a snail.
I do remember when I disconnected everything that there was a few earths. There is a main eath to the battery that I bolted to the gearbox which was an 8mm bolt. Is there another one I missed.
Any photos of the earthing in that area?
