So I went and bought new coil and some bits a few weeksa go, just got to fitting them up. Replacing and old NipponDenco 3pin coil with 2pin.
The coil is the CIC32R from SuziStore. It came with no info, and buggerred if I can find any on the web. Printed onto its side is simply 'Performance coil 12V' and 'CIC32R For use with external resistor'
Trying it as per manual with external resistor (1.6Ohm jobbie from repco) just leads to the resistor letting some smoke out when the main switch is turned to on.
Resistor is only $4 from there, as opposed to $14 from SuziStore, so rather burn a resistor than coil.
Does this one actually need the resistor though? My understanding from reading here and in general is that the resistor is needed to drop the 12V to 9V for the coil, hence a 9V coil.
So, rather than Black/White going through resistor to +ve terminal on coil, Can I connect it directly to coil and not blow the coil?
If someone from Suzistore reads this, if you are going to provide a part for a vehicle that is not identiccal to the factory fitted item, please include with or provide the specs for the unit on your website. Kthxbai.

you can connect the black/white direct to the coil and not blow it, BUT you will have problems with the points as i was having.
what sort of resister did you use? it needs to be a very high wattage.
i fitted all my new ignition gear on the weekend, including new 12v coil with an external resister/rebuilt dizzy/10mm leads, and its runs sweet now, smoother than it ever has.

The resistor is a 'Motogard' 1.6/1.06 (different from stamped to box) Ohm. No mention of power capacity at all.

Well if the new coil doesn't have three posts then it definitely isn't replacing stock with stock.
Why can't you use the old resister with the new coil? I did this when installing my Bosch GT coil and it has worked fine for the last 8 years.

This is my problem, nothing to measure up against.
Ok, so stock with 'sold to suit stock'
hopefully I'll find time to call suzistore today and ask what gives (coil specs) and if the ballast resistor they sell wil work on the f5a ignition.
Electronic ignition works so much better.

Okay, had a quick chat at Suzistore today. Got one of the generic ballast resistors they had, same as for sierra 1L. It does the job, although I still have my crap running/dieing when off power problem. Have the plugs out to change them, dizzy is all good.
Will see if the plugs help.
