141db is pretty crazy coming out of that setup... how many dbs your friend get a bit less?
140db isn't as difficult to acheive as some people think. I helped a mate with an install in his Charade that pulled 141db, and that was just a Pioneer HU, 6" 3 ways running off the deck, and 2 x 12" Pioneer subs running in a sealed box, bridged off a Soundstream 4 channel amp, with only 8 guage wiring.
F8B EFI turbo - Three pots and a snail.
And who was it that said jaycar response was crappy gear?
140Db is very easily reachable for <$1000 and you can actually get some decent sound quality if set up right. The last sound off i went to a guy who had spent 1000's on a custom install got beaten by a kid with an excel and sub he didnt even know what it was! Mind you, the sub did look quiet meaty.

Yeah, but is winning a sound off really a credible accolade?

To those who have an interest in the persuit of high SPL, yes. Like any award it is recognition of your effort and not something to be ridiculed.
Was winning an award at the small time Bungendore ute show years ago a credible accolade? Possibly not. Did it mean something to me that someone appreciated what I have done to my ute? f*#king oath.

"Whoa there... Slow down boy yo gonna @#$ too fast! ...make me mad and clench up my butt cheeks and I break you @#% off!"
Hang on... we're not talking about pride here... Dudley was inferring that winning a sound off is a good measure of how good a system is... I am questioning whether winning a car audio sound off is really an achievement in the context of the gear... Not the owner's effort or the pride that goes with it. Hell, I'd be happy to win one...

More of how good a system can be in terms of SPL, since we are discussing cheap systems and their limits etc.

Gotcha.
So to paraphrase; High SPLs can be achieved from cheap systems. [full stop]
