just a question... has any one turbo charged a normally aspirated 550?
im in the process of fitting a mitsi minicia turbo, custom made exhast manifold will all the trimmings to my 83 hatch.
now i am looking at pumping 4-6 pound thru the carby ( blow thru), have made the pipes, just wondering if any one has done this and if the have incountered any problems. ( i am using the 800's carby to keep the fuel mixtures up on the rich side.....)
any pointers...... opinions or suggestions would be great....
Cheers
the mad scientist..... Pete

size doesnt count for nothing,if ya not gettin BLOWN!
You didnt mention an intercooler, just making sure you've got it on the list of things to do
Also have you thought about using the F8 as a starting point instead?

i had an 800 in it before, and no 2 let go on me... so i have got the 550 in there( the only thing i cfould get my hands on at the time)... its only done 22,000kms.... so it was the perfect canidate for a turbo...... as for the intercooler dont know what i ma going to do about that yet, but working on getting the turbo right first........

4-5 pound won't require an intercooler, but the N/A carby won't accept positive pressure. As soon as the turbo spools fuel the needle and seat will shut and dry up the float.

what was to happen if i fitted a decent pressure electric fuel pump with return line to tank, making sure that the pump pressure is greater than the boost pressure that i am trying to put into the motor... wouldnt that compensate for the fuel needle trying to shut off?

That might work, but you'd need a fuel pressure regulator as well to avoid the engine flooding at low RPM.

An intercooler on a pull-through setup would become a bomb! Imagine a radiator filled with petrol.
One backfire and the front of the car would be history!
You could fit a BOV, but it would have to be plumb-back, otherwise you'd be venting petrol spray into the engine bay.
If you need someone to host pics for you then try imagebucket, or email them to admin@tamon.org and I'll put them up when I get a chance.

just an update, tried the conversion, got every thing fitted and blew the seals on the turbo, so i will be rebuilding the turbs and doing a couple of mods on the intake side but it did work, will get picks up as soon as possible
