The other day I went on a 120km trip (Launceston to Moorina) when it was still sub zero (or close to) temperatures. Several times along the way the boy miss-fired and stalled, with no apparent reason wile traveling at 80+ km/hr. To go with that it used 12L of petrol.

The return trip happened about mid-day (4-7 deg approx.), no miss-firing or stalling, and the fuel consumption went back to normal using less than 6L.

Having a look at the air filter - it contained massive amounts of oil, that came through the blow by. (blow by hose and air filter, full of airrated oil).

Could the oil being forced into the air filter combined with cold temperatures cause this?

Has anyone had any issues with carby freeze, and would that accumulate to the issue?

Yep, having similar issues.
My MB has a fair bit of blow by.

Fitted a plastic oil bottle and a bit of garden hose for a catch tank system.
Didn't work all that well, so just fitted one of those cheap filters off fleabay.

Also suffering carby icing.
Only seemed to do it on the way to work.
Lose all power. Pull over. Let it idle for a couple of mins (heat soak) and good for another half hour.

Figured it must be icing, but couldn't prove it.

My MB didn't have the tube that goes between the exhaust and air cleaner when I bought it. Fitted a new one ($12) and no more problems.

had the problem of losing power when i went for roadworthy. car actually stopped 150m from place and i had to push it in. carby freezing due to not having preheat tube - like mentioned in last post - $12 and no more problems for years. wife got caught at maccas drive thru friday night on a short run, but it was 2 degrees.
